Leyla Fernandez goes to us on the third round with three set of victory

Leylah Fernandez Makes a Comeback at US Open, Defeats Elsa Jacquemot

Leylah Fernandez, the 31st seed at the US Open Tennis Championships, showcased her resilience as she rallied from a set down to defeat France’s Elsa Jacquemot in the second round of the ladies singles on Wednesday evening. Fernandez, who finished as the runner-up in 2021, struggled in the first set, winning only one service game and securing just 42 percent of points on her first serve.

However, the 22-year-old from Laval, Quebec, found her rhythm in the second and third sets, breaking Jacquemot three times to clinch the match in two hours and 16 minutes. Fernandez had previously cruised through the first round with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rebecca Marino from Vancouver.

In the next round, Fernandez will face the winner of a match between World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Polina Kudermetova. Additionally, Fernandez is also competing in the women’s doubles alongside tennis legend Venus Williams. The pair, who received a wildcard entry, will take on the sixth-seeded duo of Lyudmyla Kichenok from Ukraine and Ellen Perez of Australia in the first round.

Meanwhile, in other matches at the US Open, Canadian players Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Erin Routliffe from New Zealand, the third seeds in the women’s doubles, will face Czech team Marketa Vondrousova and Miriam Skoch. In the men’s singles, Canadians Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Gabriel Diallo are set to compete in the second round.

Shapovalov, seeded 27th, will take on France’s Valentin Royer, while Auger-Aliassime, seeded 25th, will face Roman Safiullin of Russia. Diallo, seeded 31st, will meet Spain’s Jaume Munar in their respective matches. The Canadian contingent is looking to make a strong showing at the US Open as they continue their pursuit of tennis glory.
