Kraft Heinz splitting into 2 brands, a decade after megafood merger

Kraft Heinz Announces Split into Two Companies

Kraft Heinz, one of the biggest food companies in the world, is undergoing a major transformation as it splits into two separate entities after a decade of operating as a merged brand. The decision comes after a strategic review of the company earlier this year, with the transaction expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.

The two new companies will be known as Global Taste Elevation Co. and North American Grocery Co., although these names are temporary and official names will be revealed at a later date. Global Taste Elevation Co. will focus on shelf-stable meals and include popular brands such as Heinz, Philadelphia cream cheese, and Kraft Mac & Cheese. On the other hand, North American Grocery Co. will concentrate on food and beverages, featuring brands like Oscar Mayer, Kraft Singles, and Lunchables.

The journey to this split began in 2013 when billionaire investor Warren Buffett teamed up with Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital to acquire H.J. Heinz Co. The merger of Kraft and Heinz in 2015 created the fifth-largest food and beverage company in the world, with annual revenue of $28 billion. However, changing consumer preferences towards healthier options and a shift away from highly processed foods posed challenges for the combined company.

Over the years, Kraft Heinz has made efforts to adapt to these changing trends by divesting certain businesses and focusing on higher-growth brands. The decision to split into two separate companies is aimed at enhancing capital allocation, prioritizing initiatives, and driving growth in key areas.

Despite the split, there are no plans to change the current headquarters locations in Chicago and Pittsburgh. Additionally, the Canadian operations of Kraft Heinz, including the production of iconic products like Heinz ketchup, are not expected to be impacted by the restructuring.

The announcement of Kraft Heinz’s split follows a trend in the food industry, with other major companies like Kellogg Co. and Keurig Dr Pepper also undergoing similar transformations in recent years. As Kraft Heinz prepares for this new chapter, investors will be closely watching to see how the two companies fare independently in the ever-evolving food and beverage market.

The stock market reacted to the news of the split, with shares of Kraft Heinz falling three per cent on Tuesday. As the company moves forward with this strategic decision, only time will tell how the two new entities will thrive in the competitive landscape of the food industry.
