New Ebola Outbreak Reported in Congo

The Ministry of Health of Congo has declared a new Ebola outbreak in the Central African country, marking the 16th occurrence of the deadly virus. The outbreak was confirmed in the province of South Kasai, with the provisional report indicating 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, including four healthcare workers.

Seriousness of the Situation

Samuel-Roger Kamba, the Minister of Health of Congo, expressed concern over the situation, stating that the fatality rate of the cases, estimated at 53.6%, highlights the severity of the outbreak. Symptoms reported in the suspected cases include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding.

Response Efforts

The confirmed case was identified in a 34-year-old pregnant woman in Boulapé. In response to the outbreak, the World Health Organization has deployed experts and a Rapid Response team to the province of Kasai to enhance disease surveillance, treatment, and infection prevention and control measures. Supplies such as personal protective equipment, mobile laboratory equipment, and medical supplies are also being provided to support the response efforts.

Dr. Mohamed Janabi, regional director of Africa for the World Health Organization, emphasized the importance of acting swiftly to contain the spread of the virus and protect communities. The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be transmitted through bodily fluids, making it a significant public health concern.

Congo has access to treatments and the Everbo Ebola vaccine to help combat the outbreak. Efforts are underway to halt the transmission of the virus and prevent further fatalities in the affected areas.
