RCMP Officer Hospitalized After Encounter with Aggressive Driver in Cumberland County
An RCMP officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries on Tuesday afternoon after an encounter with an “aggressive” driver in Cumberland County.
According to a news release from RCMP, officers responded to a report of a car “being driven in an erratic manner” on Highway 104 around 3 p.m., then another that the car had ended up in a ditch near Salt Springs, N.S.
When an officer located and approached the car, the driver “became aggressive and struck and kicked the officer,” the Mounties said.
Bystanders assisted the officer by providing initial first aid and other officers “attended immediately,” said the release.
The driver, a 30-year-old man from Antigonish County, was charged with assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, resisting arrest, impaired operation of a conveyance and impaired operation over 80mg%.
The man appeared in Amherst provincial court on Wednesday and was released on conditions pending future court appearances, police said.
Police are still looking for dashcam video showing a grey Toyota Camry driving erratically in the westbound lanes of Highway 104 before 3 p.m. on Sept. 2 or that shows the arrest and assault.
