NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani could get 16% pay hike under new proposal

Zohran Mamdani and other top officials in New York City could be in line for a significant pay raise if a proposed 16% hike goes through as planned. Councilwoman Nantasha Williams, D-Queens, introduced a bill that would increase council members’ salaries from $148,500 to $172,500, as reported by the New York Post.

If the bill is passed, the pay raise would also apply to the new mayor, public advocate, comptroller, and borough presidents. This would mean Mamdani’s salary could jump to nearly $300,000 from the current $258,000.

The legislation is set to be introduced this week with a hearing expected by the end of the year, allowing for a vote by the next City Council in January. It’s worth noting that council members last received a raise back in 2016.

Mamdani, known for his platform focused on affordability for working-class New Yorkers, has pledged various initiatives such as free buses, rent freezes on rent-stabilized apartments, universal childcare, and city-run grocery stores. He has also proposed a gradual increase of the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030, with plans to fund these proposals through tax increases on wealthy individuals and large corporations.

As a state assembly member in 2022, Mamdani voted in favor of a pay raise for state legislators. The latest pay hike plans for NYC were originally intended for Mayor Eric Adams’ approval but have since been rescheduled. Williams expressed confidence that the council will pass the bill in January.

The potential pay raise legislation puts Mamdani in a challenging position, as he must decide whether to approve a law that benefits the political class or veto it. Fox News Digital has reached out to Mamdani for comment on the matter.
