Cenovus was given a cleanup job after diesel spilled in Alta. more

CALGARY – Cenovus Energy Inc. received a cleanup order from the Alberta Energy Regulator after more than 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into a lake in northern Alberta.

The non-compliance order issued by the regulator last week says Cenovus operated a temporary diesel generator near Rainbow Lake earlier this month due to a loss of power infrastructure due to a wildfire.

It says that on June 17, between 1,000 and 1,500 gallons of diesel leaked from that generator into the lake.

Located west of High Level in northwestern Alberta, Rainbow Lake is known to be rich in fish and is popular with both recreational users and native fishermen.

The regulator says Cenovus has activated an emergency plan and is working to contain and salvage the leaked diesel.

The regulator says Cenovus must also begin a program of regular sampling for the presence of hydrocarbons in the soil, vegetation and water in the area and also conduct an assessment of affected fish and wildlife.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on June 26, 2023.
