Ongoing storm repairs, public safety concerns leave thousands without power in Quebec

MONTREAL — Hydro-Québec says fewer than 2,000 customers who lost power Thursday due to a thunderstorm are still without electricity, but other storms have led to further power cuts.

At around 1 p.m., about 5,600 hydropower customers across the province were without power

Hydro-Québec spokesman Francis Labbé says isolated thunderstorms have sparked new outages in several parts of the province.

Public safety officials also called for power cuts in Montreal on Sunday morning, affecting 8,000 customers, though power was restored to all but 450 by 1 p.m.

Labbé says he has no specific information on why the cuts were requested, but notes that they are usually caused by gas leaks or cars hitting hydroelectric plants.

More than 392,000 hydropower customers lost power during Thursday’s storm.
