Oakville restaurant owner, head chef charged in human trafficking investigation

Two Oakville Men Charged with Human Trafficking in Alleged Sushi Restaurant Exploitation Case
Two men from Oakville, Ontario are facing human trafficking charges after allegedly exploiting three Mexican men who worked at their sushi restaurant, according to Halton police. The investigation began in March after authorities received a tip about exploitation at August 8, a sushi restaurant franchise in Oakville.
Police executed search warrants at the restaurant and two Oakville homes, where they discovered individuals living in cramped, overcrowded, and unsanitary conditions. The victims reported feeling powerless and dependent, with violations extending to their sexual integrity.
Following the searches, more victims came forward to report similar experiences. The 46-year-old owner of the August 8 franchise in Oakville faces multiple charges, including three counts of trafficking in persons, possession of crime proceeds over $5,000, and unauthorized employment of foreign nationals.
The restaurant’s 27-year-old head chef is also facing human trafficking charges and three counts of sexual assault. Both men were arrested last week and are currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
The Halton police’s human trafficking division is continuing to investigate the case and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Authorities believe there may be additional victims involved in the exploitation scheme.
CBC has reached out to August 8 for comment on the situation. The restaurant has not yet responded to requests for a statement.
