Woman, 21, suffers life-threatening injuries in South Shore crash

A 21-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital Tuesday evening after a head-on crash in Lunenburg County.

Cpl. Chris Marshall said RCMP, firefighters and paramedics were called to New Cumberland Road in Lake Centre at 6:30 p.m.

He said a Hyundai Kona and Volkswagen Jetta GLI travelling in opposite directions collided head on.

The 21-year-old woman in the Volkswagen suffered life-threatening injuries. She was freed by firefighters and was taken to South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater before being flown to Haifax.

The 77-year-old woman driving the other car was not seriously hurt. The two women were the only occupants of the vehicles.

The highway was closed for several hours while a traffic reconstructionist worked at the scene but has since reopened.

The investigation into the collision is continuing.
