Canada Day 2024: Your guide to what’s open and closed in the Halifax area

To help you plan your Canada Day, here’s a list of what’s open and what’s not across the Halifax region on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Groceries

Gateway Meat Market: Open.

Pete’s Frootique: Closed.​​ 

Sobeys: Closed.

Atlantic Superstore: Closed.

Costco: Closed.

Walmart: Closed.

Drugstores: Some pharmacies are open but have limited hours.

Liquor and beer

NSLC: Closed. Check their website for more information on local agency stores.

Some independent and small wine and beer stores will be open.

Malls

The following malls are closed on Canada Day:

  • Halifax Shopping Centre.
  • Mic Mac Mall.
  • Sunnyside Mall.
  • Bedford Place Mall.
  • Park Lane Mall.

Halifax Public Libraries

Most branches are closed.

Transit

Halifax Transit buses and the Alderney ferry service will be operating on holiday schedules Monday. The Woodside ferry will not be operating.

The Alderney ferry service is free on Monday.

Parking

On-street parking meter spaces are free on Monday. 

Waste collection

There will be no garbage, organics or recyclables collection services on Monday. Curbside collection normally scheduled for Monday, July 1, will instead occur on Saturday, June 29. 

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility will be closed on Monday, July 1, but will be open on Saturday, June 29, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

The Materials Recovery Facility will be closed on Monday, July 1, but will be open on Saturday, June 29, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Saturday, June 29, but will be open on Saturday, July 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Recreation and entertainment

The Halifax Regional Municipality is hosting numerous celebratory events.

Introduced in 2022, Kana’ta: Canada Day is an event developed in collaboration with Indigenous communities. A full list of events is posted here.

Municipal beaches open on Canada Day. 

The Bedford and Cole Harbour outdoor pools, as well as supervised municipal beaches, will open for the season on Monday.

The Halifax Common Aquatics Facility is open for the season. The Bayers-Westwood, George Dixon, Isleville Street, Cole Harbour, Shirley’s, Westmount and Sackville splashpads are also opened for the 2024 season. Pool and swim schedules are posted online.

The Emera Oval will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and equipment lending will be available if weather and surface conditions permit.

 Many municipal-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday. 

 All Cineplex theatres are open. 

Banks

All banks are closed on Canada Day.

311 call centres

The 311 contact centre will be closed Monday for full service. However, urgent calls can still be reported. Regular operations will resume Tuesday.

In-person customer service centres will be closed Monday. They’ll reopen with regular hours on Tuesday.
