77-year-old dead, 2 seriously injured in Clare crash

A 77-year-old woman from Saint Alphonse, N.S., was killed in a two-vehicle crash in the Municipality of the District of Clare Sunday evening and RCMP say a man is now charged with impaired driving causing death. 

The 33-year-old man, who is also from Saint Alphonse, was driving on Highway 1 in Mavillette, N.S., when his car veered out of its lane and collided with a SUV travelling in the opposite direction, police said in a news release. 

RCMP said the 77-year-old, a passenger in the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. That vehicle’s driver and another passenger were taken to the hospital with injuries police said were life threatening. 

The RCMP release said the 33-year-old was arrested at the scene and transported to a hospital where blood samples were collected. The investigation is ongoing. 

Police said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. and the highway was closed in both directions for several hours.
