Democrat Vicente Gonzalez wins re-election, defeating Mayra Flores in Texas
Incumbent Democrat Rep. Vicente Gonzalez Jr. secured re-election, triumphing over former Republican Rep. Mayra Flores to represent Texas’ 34th Congressional District, as projected by The Associated Press on Wednesday. With 99% of the votes tallied, Gonzalez maintained a lead over Flores with 51% to 48%. Gonzalez previously held the seat for Texas’ 15th Congressional District before the 2022 midterm elections. However, following the 2020 census, the district underwent redistricting, prompting Gonzalez to run for the newly delineated 34th Congressional District.
Flores, who won a special election in June 2022 to fill the seat vacated by then-Democrat Rep. Filemon Vela Jr., went head-to-head with Gonzalez in the 2022 midterms. Despite a fierce competition, Gonzalez emerged victorious, securing a full term in office.
