Canadian Premier League wants to expand by 2 teams in 2026
The Canadian Premier League (CPL) is gearing up for expansion in 2026, with plans to add two new teams to the league. Commissioner Mark Noonan revealed that discussions are underway with groups in several cities across Canada, including Edmonton, Laval, Kelowna, Kitchener, Waterloo, Windsor, Quebec City, Saskatoon, and the Toronto area.
Currently, the CPL boasts eight teams spread across five provinces. Edmonton, which had a team in the league from 2019 to 2022, is one of the cities being considered for a new franchise. Despite folding due to poor attendance and lackluster performance, there is potential for a revival of professional soccer in the city.
Kelowna, British Columbia, also showed promise as a potential location for CPL games. A test match between Vancouver FC and Cavalry FC drew nearly 6,300 fans, indicating strong interest in the sport in the area. Noonan expressed the league’s intention to play more games in markets where there is significant fan engagement.
