Governments must rein in online gambling before it’s too late, say public health experts

The rise of online gambling has created a new avenue for individuals to access betting options at any time and from anywhere, leading to concerns about its impact on mental health and well-being. Adam Pettle, a recovering gambling addict, shared his story of struggling with addiction from a young age, eventually leading him to sell his family’s home due to mounting debts.

The Lancet’s commission on gambling recently called on governments to address gambling as a public health issue, similar to alcohol and tobacco. This shift in perspective aims to highlight the detrimental effects of gambling on individuals and society as a whole. The report emphasizes the importance of regulating gambling to reduce harm and provide support and treatment for those affected.

In Canada, the legalization of online gambling has led to an increase in sports betting ads and promotions, particularly targeting youth. The popularity of single-event sports betting has created a “Wild West” gambling environment in Ontario, with concerns raised about the impact on vulnerable populations. Statistics Canada estimates that nearly two-thirds of Canadians gamble, with a significant number at risk of developing a gambling problem.

Nigel Turner, a scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, highlighted the rise in calls to the Ontario Problem Gambling helpline since the legalization of online gambling. He expressed concerns about the effectiveness of current regulatory measures and the need for more comprehensive protection for consumers. The report from The Lancet calls for coordinated action from governments and regulatory agencies to address gambling-related harms.

In response to the increase in sports betting ads, the Senate-initiated Bill S-269 seeks to create a national framework for regulating gambling promotions, similar to regulations for tobacco and alcohol. The bill aims to protect vulnerable populations from the harmful effects of excessive gambling and ensure responsible advertising practices.
