Trump expected to pick Linda McMahon to serve as education secretary

President-elect Trump is expected to select Linda McMahon to serve as the secretary of the Department of Education in his upcoming Cabinet, according to two sources familiar with the situation who confirmed the pick to Fox News on Tuesday evening.

McMahon, who previously served as the administrator of the Small Business Administration during the first Trump administration, is the wife of Vince McMahon. Together, the couple co-founded World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 1980.

Having served in the Trump administration from 2017 to 2019, McMahon resigned from her position citing that it had been “immensely rewarding.” She expressed her gratitude towards the President and vowed to continue advocating for him and his policies.

President Trump had previously considered the idea of abolishing the Department of Education, which was established in 1980. The agency’s mission, as stated on its website, is to “promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access for students of all ages.”

Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos recently voiced her opinion on the department, stating that it “doesn’t really add any value anywhere.” DeVos believes that there is an opportunity for Trump to make significant changes within the department, emphasizing the need to decentralize decision-making and allocate funds at a more local level to benefit students.

In a bid to enhance educational outcomes, DeVos suggested shifting power away from the Department of Education, block-granting funds, and empowering local communities to make better educational decisions. She criticized the department’s track record over the past four decades, highlighting its failure to narrow achievement gaps and improve student outcomes.

As the news of McMahon’s potential appointment continues to make headlines, it remains to be seen how her leadership will shape the future of education policy in the United States.
