University of Austin weeds out DEI, replaces it with merit-based initiatives: VP

The University of Austin (UATX) made headlines this fall as it welcomed its first cohort of students with a unique approach to higher education. Unlike many universities focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, UATX is prioritizing freedom of speech, open debates, and merit-based admissions.

“We want to create an environment that’s safe for ideas to be explored and where there’s not risks to the student for taking positions as they explore,” said UATX Vice President Michael Shires in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Founded in 2021 by a group of academics and public figures, including former New York Times reporter Bari Weiss, UATX has positioned itself as a champion of free speech amid concerns about the decline of open discourse on college campuses. Although the university is currently unaccredited, it has garnered significant support from private donors like billionaire Bill Ackman and activist Harlan Crow, enabling it to offer free tuition to its inaugural students.

In a departure from traditional higher education models, UATX does not rely on federal financial aid for its students. Instead, the university focuses on fostering an environment of civil discourse and intellectual exploration. Shires emphasized the importance of creating a space where students can engage in respectful debates and exchange ideas freely.

The university’s commitment to open dialogue is reflected in its use of the Chatham House Rule, which allows students to share information and ideas discussed in class without attributing them to specific individuals. This practice encourages a culture of open communication and collaboration within the academic community.

With a diverse student body representing a wide range of ideologies, UATX aims to bridge the ideological gap prevalent in many academic institutions. Shires highlighted the school’s admissions process, which evaluates students based on a variety of merit measures rather than ideological alignment.
