Pete Hegseth ramps up Pentagon pitch with back-to-back meetings on Capitol Hill

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, is actively engaging in meetings on Capitol Hill to solidify his position as the head of the Pentagon. Since his nomination, Hegseth has been meeting with senators in Washington, D.C., in hopes of garnering their support prior to his confirmation hearing next year.

On Wednesday, Hegseth continued his efforts by meeting with incoming Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who is expected to chair the Armed Services Committee, followed by a crucial meeting with incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. Despite facing a series of drinking and sexual misconduct allegations, Hegseth has vehemently denied all accusations since being selected for the prominent role in the administration.

Recent reports have suggested that President Trump is contemplating nominating Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as Defense secretary in place of Hegseth amidst the allegations. However, Hegseth remains undeterred by the potential replacement, revealing that he had a conversation with Trump who encouraged him to persevere in his efforts.

“Why would I back down?” Hegseth asserted. “I have always been a fighter. I am here for the war fighters.” He further expressed his commitment by stating that he would be engaging in meetings with senators throughout the day.

It is important to note that multiple sources have confirmed these developments, with Fox News contributors Bret Baier, Paul Steinhauser, and Bill Melugin providing additional insights. Aubrie Spady has contributed to this report as a Writer for Fox News Digital.
