Hegseth goes to Capitol Hill for another day of meetings to rally support

President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth, continued his efforts to garner support from Republican senators on Capitol Hill. Throughout the day, Hegseth met with several GOP senators, including Rick Scott, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Mike Rounds, Ron Johnson, Tom Cotton, and Sen.-elect Jim Banks.

These meetings followed earlier discussions Hegseth had with other Republican senators, such as Sen. Roger Wicker and incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Despite facing criticism on various fronts, including allegations of fiscal mismanagement, alcoholism, and sexual misconduct, Hegseth expressed confidence in Trump’s full support.

During his meetings, senators like Scott and Banks voiced their support for Hegseth, citing his military background and commitment to supporting warfighters. Scott emphasized Hegseth’s willingness to lead troops into battle, while Banks highlighted his determination to confront challenges posed by countries like China, Russia, and Iran.

Hegseth, in response to questions about his meeting with Sen. Joni Ernst, remained positive and described the discussions as productive and candid. When pressed about the allegations against him, Hegseth maintained a diplomatic stance, respecting the confidentiality of his conversations with senators.

Reflecting on his interactions with senators, Hegseth acknowledged the wealth of knowledge and expertise present in the Senate Armed Services Committee. He expressed gratitude for the insights and advice provided by senators, underscoring his eagerness to earn their support as the nominee for defense secretary.

Aside from his meetings with senators, Hegseth’s activities coincided with visits to Capitol Hill by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The trio engaged in discussions about their respective roles in President-elect Trump’s administration, with Hegseth focusing on his potential leadership of the Department of Defense.
