Nova Scotia RCMP officer facing new sexual assault charges

Nova Scotia RCMP Officer Faces Additional Sex-Related Charges

A Nova Scotia RCMP officer who was previously charged with three counts of sexual assault earlier this year is now facing two more sex-related charges. The RCMP in Cumberland County released a statement stating that they received a report in July regarding an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the summer of 2019 in Northport, N.S.

RCMP Const. William McNutt was arrested on November 29 and is set to appear in Amherst provincial court on January 6, 2025. It was revealed that McNutt joined the RCMP in 2021 and was off-duty at the time of the alleged incidents. In January, he was suspended from his duties after the RCMP disclosed that he was facing accusations of sexual misconduct related to events in 2023, which were referred to the province’s independent police oversight agency.

The Serious Incident Response Team confirmed on July 11 that McNutt has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, as well as uttering threats and overcoming resistance to commit an offense. The agency also stated that McNutt was serving with the East Hants detachment and was off-duty at the time of the alleged offenses in 2023.

These new charges have further heightened concerns within the community and raised questions about the vetting process for RCMP officers. It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to thoroughly screen and monitor their personnel to ensure the public’s safety and trust in the police force.

As the case unfolds, it is essential for the justice system to conduct a fair and thorough investigation to determine the truth and deliver justice for the victims. The RCMP must also take appropriate disciplinary actions to uphold accountability and maintain the integrity of the police force.
