Canadian forward Jonathan David reached a significant milestone by scoring his 100th career goal for Lille in a 3-1 victory over Brest in Ligue 1 action on Friday.
The 24-year-old player from Ottawa put on a stellar performance at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, netting two goals and assisting on another as Lille extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches.
David now boasts 17 goals in 23 games across all competitions this season and leads the French top division with 11 goals.
Having joined Lille in August 2020 in a record $46.5 million transfer from KAA Gent in Belgium, David entered the game with 99 goals in all competitions and left with an impressive tally of 101 goals in 206 appearances for the club.
“So happy for Jonathan. What an accomplishment,” praised Canada’s coach Jesse Marsch in a social media tribute.
David opened the scoring for Lille from the penalty spot just nine minutes into the match and then provided an assist for the second goal before halftime, setting up Iceland’s winger Hákon Haraladsson with a well-placed cross.
Despite Ludovic Ajorque pulling one back for Brest early in the second half, David sealed the victory for Lille with his second goal of the game, capitalizing on a loose ball and finding the back of the net.
The talented striker, who holds the top spot on Canada’s men’s scoring chart with 31 goals from 59 appearances, is set to become a free agent after this season and has been attracting interest from several top European clubs.
Lille’s dominance over Brest at home continued, as the team has not suffered a defeat to Brest on their own turf since 1989.
With the win, Lille moved level on points with Marseille and Monaco in second place, sitting seven points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who faced off against Auxerre later on Friday.
