Just 3 months after a shark took his leg, this P.E.I. kiteboarder was back on the water
Mornings are always tough for Lucas Arsenault. As he wakes up, he realizes that he can’t just get out of bed like he used to. There are extra steps he must take to start his day. Half a year ago, the 27-year-old professional kiteboarder from the Acadian community of Mont Carmel, P.E.I., faced a life-altering event that almost took everything from him.
In late May, during a quick trip to Turks and Caicos, where Arsenault once taught kiteboarding, he was attacked by a shark while snorkeling. The shark latched onto his right knee, shaking him back and forth underwater, causing severe injuries that led to the amputation of his right leg above the knee. Despite the traumatic experience, Arsenault managed to fight back and escape from the shark’s grasp.
The attack lasted only 30 seconds, but for Arsenault, it felt like an eternity. He vividly remembers the fear, the pain, and the uncertainty of those moments. After a nine-hour surgery and a long recovery process, he found himself facing a new reality – a life without his right leg. The dark times were filled with doubts and questions about how he would navigate this new chapter of his life.
With unwavering support from his family, friends, and the kiteboarding community, Arsenault embarked on a journey of rehabilitation and adaptation. From wheelchair to walker, crutches to prosthetic leg, he slowly regained his mobility and strength. His determination and positive attitude propelled him forward, allowing him to achieve milestones he once thought impossible.
From playing golf to kiteboarding again, Arsenault proved that nothing could hold him back. With each new challenge, he pushed himself to get stronger and more resilient. His prosthetics team marveled at his progress, setting ambitious goals for his recovery journey.
As Arsenault adapts to his new normal, he reflects on the journey that brought him here. He returned to Turks and Caicos with his family to make peace and create new memories. Amidst the emotional journey, he proposed to his girlfriend, Jory MacIsaac, who stood by his side through it all.
Though he may never go snorkeling again, Arsenault harbors no regrets about that fateful day. He sees it as a turning point in his life, a reminder of the strength and resilience he possesses. As he looks ahead, he is filled with gratitude and determination to make the most of every moment.
