Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to attend inauguration of Donald Trump

Premier Danielle Smith to Attend Second Inauguration of U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump
Premier Danielle Smith has confirmed that she will be attending the second inauguration of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump in January. This decision comes in light of threats made by Trump, who has warned of imposing 25 percent tariffs if Canada and Mexico do not take action to address illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the United States.
According to Smith’s press secretary, Sam Blackett, the premier will participate in various events leading up to the inauguration. She is scheduled to attend the inauguration on Capitol Hill on January 20th, as well as the Canadian Embassy event. Following the inauguration, Smith plans to meet with energy groups, congresspeople, and other officials.
Smith’s visit to the U.S. capital is part of a series of measures taken by her office in response to the tariff threats. Alberta recently announced a $29 million investment to establish the Interdiction Patrol Team under the Alberta Sheriffs’ command. The team, consisting of 51 officers, patrol dogs, surveillance drones, and narcotics analyzers, will focus on intercepting illegal border crossings and smuggling activities within a designated two-kilometer red zone near the border.
“We will work closely with federal law enforcement to ensure the security of our section of the American border,” Smith stated. “By preventing criminals from operating in both countries, we aim to strengthen our relationship with the United States.”
Smith has emphasized her opposition to tariffs on Canadian and U.S. goods, citing the negative impact on consumers in both countries. Instead, Alberta is pursuing a diplomatic approach to address the tariff threats.
“We are engaging with our allies in the U.S. to promote Alberta’s oil and gas industry as a key contributor to energy affordability, security, and North American defense,” Smith explained.
Energy products, particularly crude oil, are Canada’s top exports to the United States. Statistics show that the majority of Canada’s crude oil production is exported to the U.S., with Alberta being the largest supplier of crude oil and natural gas.
As Premier Smith prepares to attend Trump’s inauguration, her focus remains on strengthening ties with the United States while advocating for a mutually beneficial energy partnership.
