US Election 2024

GOP rebels switch vote to Johnson after Trump’s 11th hour calls, pushing him over the finish line

President-elect Trump played a crucial role in helping Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., secure his position as the leader of the House of Representatives without a messy and drawn-out fight. After initially voting for other candidates, Reps. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., and Keith Self, R-Texas, were persuaded to support Johnson after speaking with Trump over the phone.

Following the roll call vote, Norman and Self were seen entering a side room with Johnson and other members before emerging and announcing their support for Johnson, solidifying his victory. Self later confirmed that he had multiple phone conversations with Trump on that day, describing their discussions as lively.

It was revealed that Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., facilitated the connection between Trump and the holdouts, Norman and Self. Although Mace did not comment on the matter, she was spotted sharing a hug with Johnson on the House floor after the crucial discussions took place.

Norman also confirmed that he had spoken with Trump, highlighting the significant role the President-elect played in securing Johnson’s win. Despite initial indications that Johnson might lose the speakership, he ultimately prevailed in the first round of voting, thanks to the support he garnered after the intervention of Trump and other key players.

House leaders refrained from formally concluding the vote, opting to find a way forward while instructing GOP lawmakers to be ready for a potential second vote. However, the second vote did not take place, and Johnson was sworn in as speaker on Friday afternoon, solidifying his leadership position.

The smooth resolution of the House leadership battle showcased the importance of strategic negotiations and alliances in the political arena. Trump’s involvement in the process underscored his influence within the Republican party and his ability to sway key decisions in the House of Representatives.
