Iqaluit budgie home safe after a week outdoors in Arctic temperatures

An extraordinary young budgie in Iqaluit has been safely reunited with his family after embarking on a daring adventure on Christmas Day and braving a week of frigid Arctic temperatures. Blue, as he is affectionately known, managed to endure overnight lows nearing -30 C, a remarkable feat for such a small bird in such harsh conditions.

The heartwarming reunion took place when a resident of Iqaluit’s Tundra Ridge neighborhood stumbled upon Blue on New Year’s Day while walking her dog. Cathy Mcgee was taken aback by the unexpected chirping coming from her backyard and was shocked to discover the lost budgie perched nearby.

Blue had seized the opportunity to slip out the door when his family made a quick trip to the convenience store, leaving his owners, Leah Novalinga and her family, devastated upon their return. Despite their efforts to locate him, including playing videos of his favorite budgie celebrity, Boba, throughout town, Blue remained elusive, leaving the family distraught.

Fortunately, fate intervened when Mcgee recognized Blue from her encounter with Novalinga and her family during their search. With a gentle approach, she was able to safely capture the adventurous budgie and return him to his rightful owners. Novalinga’s joy knew no bounds when she opened her door to find Blue back in her arms, safe and sound.

Overcome with emotion, Novalinga showered Blue with kisses and tended to his immediate needs, providing him with food and warmth after his ordeal. The once-hungry and shivering bird quickly regained his strength and size, much to the relief and delight of his grateful family.
