McConnell, who wore a “Jimmy Carter for president” button, expressed his admiration for Carter’s humanitarian efforts and friendship with President Ford.

Eric Stromayer, who volunteered on Carter’s campaign as a high schooler and attended his inauguration in 1977, encouraged others to seize the opportunity to give the former president a fitting send-off. Stromayer noted the swift-moving lines to view Carter’s casket and emphasized the importance of honoring a highly regarded leader.

As Carter’s casket prepares to depart the Capitol for the Washington National Cathedral and ultimately his hometown of Plains, Georgia, the nation reflects on his enduring legacy of service and compassion.
