Chicago mayor reiterates opposition to incoming Trump admin’s immigration reform
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson reiterated his staunch opposition to President-elect Trump’s plans to crack down on dangerous illegal immigrants accused of crimes in the U.S. once he takes office. Despite the upcoming change in federal administration, Johnson’s office has affirmed Chicago’s commitment to comply with the 2017 Illinois Trust Act, which bars local law enforcement from aiding federal immigration enforcement.
In a recent social media post, Johnson declared, “Chicago stands strong: regardless of the circumstances, our commitment to protecting and supporting this city remains unwavering. We will continue to fight for the justice and safety of all who call this place home.”
The mayor’s unwavering stance against Trump’s policies was further emphasized in a speech he gave shortly after the election results. Johnson vowed to defend the people of Chicago, highlighting the threats posed not only to new arrivals and undocumented families but also to Black families. He accused Trump of seeking to dismantle public education and limit opportunities for descendants of slaves.
“We’re going to stand up, and we’re going to protect undocumented individuals, Black folks, brown folks, Asian folks… The anti-sentiment in this political space is unconscionable and dangerous. We will protect and invest in people, making Chicago better, stronger, and safer regardless of who’s in the White House,” Johnson passionately stated.
In response to potential ICE visits, Johnson issued guidelines instructing city officials to contact designated attorneys or supervisors before taking any action. The guidelines emphasize demanding copies of warrants, refusing ICE entry to private or sensitive locations, and maintaining written records during any interactions.
Despite the mayor’s efforts to shield undocumented individuals, Chicago residents have expressed frustration over the city’s handling of the migrant crisis. With tens of thousands of illegal immigrants residing in the city and reports of significant financial burdens, residents have raised concerns about resource allocation and proposed tax hikes.
