Israeli military chief steps down over October. 7 Hamas massacre: ‘weighs on me everyday’

Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi’s resignation as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff has sent shockwaves through the country, following the military’s failures during the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks. Despite his decorated four-decade military career, Halevi took responsibility for the tragedy, which left over 1,400 Israelis dead and dozens abducted.

In his resignation letter, Halevi expressed deep regret for the IDF’s failure to protect Israel’s citizens on that fateful day. However, he also highlighted the military’s achievements under his leadership, including operations that weakened terrorist organizations like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran’s regional influence. Halevi emphasized that the IDF’s mission to dismantle Hamas’s governing capabilities and secure the return of all hostages would continue even after his departure.

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Halevi for his service, opposition leaders seized the opportunity to criticize the government. Calls for accountability and a state commission of inquiry into the events of Oct. 7 have grown louder, with demands for Netanyahu and his cabinet to resign.

Speculation over Halevi’s successor has begun, with leading candidates like Eyal Zamir and Maj. Gen. Uri Gordin being considered for the position. The pressure on Netanyahu’s government continues to mount, with public approval ratings at an all-time low.

As Israel navigates this period of political turmoil and transition in its security establishment, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. The legacy of Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi will be remembered for both the successes and challenges faced during his tenure as IDF chief of staff.
