Tymofeeva said she was too scared to step outside, even to go to the bathroom. She would wait until she heard a lull in the fighting before quickly running to relieve herself in a makeshift toilet.
“I was so scared. I thought I was going to die there alone,” she said.
After being evacuated, Tymofeeva was taken to a temporary shelter where she has been given a warm bed, food, and medical attention. She still struggles with nightmares and anxiety, but she is grateful to be safe.
The situation in Kherson remains dire, with more and more civilians being targeted by Russian drones on a daily basis. The attacks have created a climate of fear and uncertainty, with many residents unsure of when or where the next strike will occur.
Human rights organizations have condemned the use of drones to target civilians, calling it a clear violation of international humanitarian law. The Russian military denies targeting civilians, but the evidence on the ground tells a different story.
As the conflict in Kherson rages on, residents like Dmytro, Tymofeeva, and countless others are left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. The scars of war run deep, both physically and emotionally, and the road to recovery will be long and difficult.
But amidst the devastation and destruction, there is hope. The resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people shine through, as they come together to support one another and rebuild their shattered communities.
As the sun sets on another day in Kherson, the sound of drones buzzing overhead serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing conflict. But through it all, the people of Kherson remain steadfast in their determination to survive, rebuild, and reclaim their lives from the chaos of war.
