Israeli defense minister orders IDF to plan for Gazans to leave
Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s proposal for a large number of Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip. He instructed the IDF to prepare a plan in line with the controversial proposal. Katz referred to Trump’s plan as bold and stated that it could provide extensive opportunities for those in Gaza who wish to leave.
Initially, Trump’s plan suggested that Gaza’s population would be permanently relocated while the United States rebuilds the territory. However, U.S. officials later clarified that the relocation would only be temporary. During a joint press conference with Netanyahu, Trump announced that the U.S. would take over the Gaza Strip and be responsible for dismantling dangerous weapons and explosives in the area. He emphasized the need for economic development to create jobs and housing for the people of Gaza.
Katz emphasized the importance of providing multiple exit options for Palestinians willing to leave Gaza. He mentioned land crossings, as well as special arrangements for departure by sea and air. Katz singled out countries like Spain, Ireland, and Norway, urging them to allow Gazans to enter their territories as they have previously criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza. Katz believes that their refusal to accept Gazans would expose their hypocrisy.
While the plan has been met with rejection from Palestinians and the international community, who view it as forcible displacement and a violation of international law, Katz remains optimistic about its potential benefits. Rights groups have raised concerns about the plan, citing violations of international law related to forcible displacement.
