US Election 2024

Minnesota Republicans notch deal securing temporary majority after Dems refused to show up for work

Republicans in Minnesota have found themselves in a unique position of power in the progressive-dominated government after a power-sharing agreement was reached due to Democrats refusing to show up to work for several weeks. The saga began when a district court judge ruled that Democratic House Rep.-elect Curtis Johnson did not meet residency requirements, giving Republicans a temporary majority of 67-66 in the House until a special election could be held.

House Democrats boycotted the legislative session, accusing Republicans of abusing their power. This stalemate prevented the House from conducting official business, leading to threats of recall efforts against Democratic lawmakers. However, an organizational agreement was reached, ensuring Republican Speaker Lisa Demuth will serve a full two-year term regardless of the special election outcome.

With a 67-66 majority, Republicans hold committee chair positions and a one-vote advantage on all committees. If the special election results in a tie, committee leadership will be shared between Republicans and Democrats. The Fraud Prevention and Agency Oversight Committee will remain under Republican control for the full two-year period.

Demuth criticized Governor Tim Walz for his lack of engagement during the standoff, noting he had not contacted her and issued a partisan statement. She emphasized the need to address fraud in the state and improve education, which has seen declining test scores under Walz’s leadership.

The Republican State Leadership Committee congratulated Demuth for securing the House leadership role, highlighting the voters’ desire for Republicans to serve as a check on Walz’s agenda. Governor Walz and the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party have yet to comment on the situation.

As the House reconvenes, Republicans are committed to addressing the state’s budget and key issues. Despite the challenges faced, they are determined to work towards the best interests of the people of Minnesota and ensure that the state’s government functions effectively.
