DeepSeek concerns prompt GOP lawmaker’s moves to crack down on China exports

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, a top House Republican, is taking action to make it more difficult for China to acquire advanced U.S. technology in response to longstanding concerns about intellectual property theft by Beijing.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Green revealed his plans for new legislation aimed at establishing safeguards to prevent incidents like China’s development of DeepSeek using American technology. He expressed alarm over reports that China stockpiled chips and potentially used chips below the current export control threshold to achieve this AI breakthrough.

Green emphasized the need for caution, stating, “This scenario should be a wakeup call — if you give the CCP an inch, it will take a mile. The CCP’s craftiness is coupled with a total disregard for legal and security considerations. We already know that the CCP uses technology to oppress its own citizens and to commit acts of espionage and sabotage against the United States, including major cyberattacks.”

DeepSeek, an AI software company based in Hangzhou, China, recently made headlines with the release of a new AI model that rivals existing models from companies like Meta and OpenAI. The company’s AI chatbot has drawn comparisons to ChatGPT, developed by California-based OpenAI.

The release of DeepSeek’s cost-effective AI model raised concerns in U.S. markets, highlighting China’s growing economic competitiveness and the challenges faced by American business leaders and lawmakers in responding to this trend. U.S. officials are now investigating whether DeepSeek used banned chips in violation of sanctions.

Green’s proposed legislation aims to impose export controls on key national interest technology and intellectual property destined for China. The bill also calls for sanctions against foreign entities involved in selling or buying restricted items with China, as well as Chinese entities that knowingly utilize controlled items.

As the debate over how to address China’s technological advancements continues, Green’s initiative underscores the ongoing efforts to safeguard American technology and prevent unauthorized access by foreign actors. The legislation represents a proactive approach to protecting U.S. interests and maintaining a competitive edge in the global tech landscape.
