Singer Ed Sheeran’s street performance in India brought to a halt by cop

A street performance by singer Ed Sheeran in Bengaluru, India, made headlines this weekend when a police officer abruptly unplugged his microphone mid-song. The incident, captured on video, shows Sheeran singing his hit song “Shape of You” on the side of a busy roadway as fans enthusiastically sing along. However, the performance came to an unexpected halt when a police officer approached and disconnected his microphone.

In a video of the incident, Sheeran can be heard expressing disappointment as he explains to the crowd that they had permission to perform, but the police officer shut it down. Despite the interruption, Sheeran assured his fans that they would see him later.

Another video taken before the performance shows Sheeran informing the crowd that they were only allowed to play one song, even though they had planned on performing more. He later took to Instagram to clarify that they had obtained permission to perform in that specific location and that it was not a spontaneous event.

Shekar T Tekkannanavar, deputy commissioner of police for central Bengaluru, stated that the event organizers had approached him for permission to hold the street performance. However, due to concerns about overcrowding on Church Street, he denied their request, leading to the interruption of Sheeran’s performance.

The incident occurred just hours before Sheeran’s scheduled concert at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru. The singer is currently on his Mathematics tour in India, making stops in six cities, including Bengaluru. As part of his tour, Sheeran has invited popular Indian artists to join him on stage, with Grammy-nominated Shilpa Rao joining him for a cover performance of the Telugu song “Chuttamalle” at the Bengaluru concert.
