Homan, Brown, Skrlik, Martin win to start Scotties Tournament of Hearts
The Scotties Tournament of Hearts kicked off in Thunder Bay, Ontario with some exciting matches on Friday. B.C.’s Corryn Brown, Alberta’s Kayla Skrlik, Saskatchewan’s Nancy Martin, and defending champion Rachel Homan all secured victories in their opening games.
Homan’s team, looking to defend their title, started strong with a commanding 13-4 win over Jane DiCarlo of Prince Edward Island. Brown also had a convincing victory, defeating Alberta’s Selena Sturmay 11-4. Skrlik managed an 8-4 win over New Brunswick’s Melissa Adams, while Martin beat hometown favorite Krista McCarville of Northern Ontario 10-6.
The 18-team field is split into two pools, with the top three from each pool advancing to the next stage. The top six teams will then battle it out for a spot in the four-team Page playoff for the final weekend.
The ultimate prize at stake is the opportunity to represent Canada at the world championship in Uijeongbu, South Korea from March 15-23.
