Red state AG promises legal fight with ICE-resisting local governments

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is taking a stand against two local jurisdictions in his state that are refusing to comply with President Donald Trump’s mass deportation program of illegal immigrants. Rokita is prepared to take legal action against these entities for their defiance of federal immigration enforcement.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Rokita emphasized the importance of state and local officials cooperating with federal law regarding immigration. He cited an Indiana state statute that mandates full cooperation with federal authorities, regardless of personal beliefs or opinions.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) have both declared their unwillingness to participate in immigration enforcement activities, including ICE raids. IMPD Chief Chris Bailey clarified that local police do not have the authority to enforce federal immigration laws and have no intention of engaging in immigration sweeps. Similarly, IPS officials stated that they would not allow ICE agents onto school grounds without a criminal warrant.
Rokita expressed concern over the disregard for the law displayed by these jurisdictions and warned them of potential legal consequences if they continue to resist federal immigration enforcement. He mentioned a previous lawsuit filed against the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff William Redman for their refusal to comply with federal immigration detainer requests.
Furthermore, Rokita highlighted the non-compliance of Indiana University and the local sheriff’s office with federal immigration laws. He indicated his plans to pursue legal action, including obtaining an injunction, to address their lack of cooperation.
President Trump’s ICE raids have been ongoing, resulting in the detention of 700 illegal immigrants, 500 of whom had prior convictions or charges. Rokita’s efforts to ensure compliance with federal immigration laws reflect a commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the interests of Indiana residents.
Fox News Digital reached out to IPS and IMPD for comment on the situation. As the legal battle unfolds, Rokita remains steadfast in his determination to enforce federal immigration laws and hold non-compliant jurisdictions accountable.
