EU chief diplomat warns Trump Putin ‘doesn’t want peace’

European leaders are expressing caution and concern over President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin “doesn’t really want peace,” casting doubt on the likelihood of a successful resolution to the conflict.

Despite Trump’s claims of progress in talks with Russia, many NATO allies and longstanding U.S. partners are growing increasingly frustrated with the administration’s approach to Ukraine. Trump’s comments have been viewed as potentially jeopardizing relationships with Moscow in exchange for improving ties with Russia.

Kallas emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia, both economically and politically, to push for a peaceful resolution. She also stressed the need to support Ukraine in order to strengthen their position both on the battlefield and at the negotiation table.

The EU chief diplomat warned against allowing Putin to divide the West over Ukraine, urging the U.S. to remain a steadfast partner in deterring Russian aggression. Kallas highlighted the sacrifices made by NATO troops in supporting the U.S. during the War on Terror, emphasizing the importance of a united front in the face of external threats.

While some European nations are looking to reaffirm their shared values with the U.S., others are seeking to distance themselves from Washington’s shifting policies on Ukraine. The abrupt change in U.S. stance towards Ukraine under the Trump and Biden administrations has left some European leaders uncertain about the future of transatlantic relations.

Kallas’s visit to Washington aimed to discuss vital security issues with U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Despite the cancellation of their meeting, Kallas remains optimistic about continued communication and cooperation on a range of global challenges, from Ukraine and the Middle East to Iran, Africa, and China.

As tensions continue to simmer in Eastern Europe, it is clear that a unified approach is necessary to address the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The EU and the U.S. must work together to maintain pressure on Russia and support Ukraine in seeking a peaceful resolution to the crisis. Only by standing together can the West effectively deter aggression and uphold the principles of international security and stability.
