Zelenskyy calls White House clash with Trump ‘regrettable’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently expressed his disappointment with his meeting at the White House last week, calling it “regrettable”. In a statement posted on social media, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready to pursue peace under the leadership of President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of working with the US to achieve a lasting peace in the region. He mentioned the need for a ceasefire, release of prisoners, and a ban on military activities that target civilian infrastructure. Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude for the support provided by the US, particularly the assistance in providing Javelin missiles to Ukraine.
The meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump did not go as planned, according to the Ukrainian President. He acknowledged the need to make things right and called for future cooperation to be constructive. Zelenskyy also expressed readiness to sign agreements related to security and minerals to enhance stability in the region.
Following the meeting with Trump, White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz described the clash between the two leaders as “ridiculous”. He highlighted the importance of Zelenskyy expressing regret for the incident and readiness to engage in peace talks.
European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, have proposed a freeze on military strikes in Ukraine for 30 days to facilitate peace negotiations. However, Trump’s White House has not yet responded to this proposal.
In response to Zelenskyy’s statement, Trump decided to pause all aid to Ukraine, with a senior administration official stating that military assistance will remain on hold until Ukrainian leaders demonstrate a commitment to genuine peace negotiations. The official clarified that this is not a permanent termination of aid but a temporary pause.
Overall, Zelenskyy’s statement reflects a willingness to work towards peace in the region under the leadership of President Trump. The developments following the White House meeting indicate a complex diplomatic situation that requires careful navigation to achieve a lasting resolution.
