Polish government plans military training for all adult men

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Friday that his government is taking steps to implement large-scale military training for every adult male in response to the changing security landscape in Europe. The goal of this initiative is to establish a reserve force that can effectively address potential threats to the nation.

In a speech delivered to Poland’s lower house of parliament, Tusk emphasized the need for a well-equipped army of 500,000 soldiers, including reservists. While Tusk clarified that he is not advocating for a return to universal military service, he highlighted the Swiss model of mandatory military or civilian service for men, with the option for women to volunteer. In a significant move, President Andrzej Duda has proposed a constitutional amendment mandating that Poland allocate at least 4% of its GDP annually towards defense spending.
