Oregon Gov. declares March 10 as ‘Abortion Provider Appreciation Day’

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has signed a proclamation declaring March 10 as “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day” in the state. This move is aimed at reaffirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring access to abortion care across Oregon.

In a statement, Governor Kotek emphasized the importance of recognizing abortion as healthcare and showing appreciation for providers who offer this essential service without interference or intimidation. She expressed her support for both providers and patients, promising to continue advocating for their rights and access to care.

Following the November election, Kotek directed the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to partner with OHSU to replenish the state’s supply of Mifepristone, a medication used in miscarriage management and pregnancy termination. This proactive measure was taken to ensure that reproductive healthcare remains accessible to individuals in need.

Despite facing criticism from Oregon Senate Republicans, who accused her of prioritizing abortion provider appreciation over addressing other pressing issues in the state, Governor Kotek remains steadfast in her commitment to protecting reproductive rights. She recently signed the Access to Reproductive Health Care law, House Bill 2002, which safeguards access to reproductive healthcare and provides state funding to support community organizations and clinical partners in delivering essential services.

One controversial aspect of the bill allows minors to undergo sex reassignment surgery or obtain an abortion without parental consent. This provision has drawn criticism from the Oregon Republican Party, with Chairman Justin Hwang denouncing the legislation as prioritizing “woke ideology” over common sense.

Pro-Life group “Oregon Right to Life” has also voiced opposition to Governor Kotek’s proclamation, emphasizing that they do not celebrate abortion but instead honor individuals who have chosen to leave the abortion industry. Despite differing viewpoints, the governor’s office maintains that reproductive health equity has been a longstanding priority for Kotek, both during her time as speaker of the Oregon House and as governor.

In 2023, a total of 10,075 abortions were provided in Oregon, with 1,661 patients hailing from out-of-state. This significant number underscores the importance of ensuring access to reproductive healthcare for individuals across the region, regardless of their place of residence.
