Trump ally Donalds kicking off campaign in race to succeed Florida Gov. DeSantis

GOP Rep. Byron Donalds officially launched his campaign for Florida governor on Friday with a hometown kickoff rally in Bonita Springs. The conservative lawmaker, who has represented Florida’s 19th Congressional District for four years, is the only major Republican candidate in the 2026 race to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Donalds, a staunch supporter and ally of former President Donald Trump, announced his candidacy on Fox News’ “Hannity” show last month, following Trump’s endorsement. In a show of support, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and conservative activist Charlie Kirk have recorded videos for Donalds’ campaign. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson will also speak at the event.

The campaign kickoff comes as Florida first lady Casey DeSantis has hinted at a possible gubernatorial run to succeed her husband. Veteran Republican strategist Stephen Lawson emphasized Donalds’ momentum and support across the state, predicting that with Trump’s backing, Donalds is the candidate to beat in the race.

DeSantis has praised his wife’s accomplishments and framed her as a worthy successor. Casey DeSantis has also hinted at a potential run, further adding to the intrigue of the upcoming primary. Speculation has been fueled by the governor reaching out to donors on behalf of his wife.

Donalds is expected to surpass DeSantis’ initial fundraising numbers, with sources indicating that he will likely raise over $1 million in his first month as a candidate. The congressman has been complimentary of Gov. DeSantis, acknowledging his successes while emphasizing the need to continue Florida’s conservative policies.

Despite his praise for the current governor, Donalds will use his campaign kickoff to assert his position as the frontrunner in the race. An internal poll conducted for his campaign showed him with a lead over Casey DeSantis in a hypothetical primary showdown, which increased significantly when respondents were informed of Trump’s endorsement.

With Florida solidifying as a red state, the winner of the Republican gubernatorial primary will be heavily favored in the general election. Donalds aims to build on the state’s conservative successes while also establishing his own path forward. With strong support from Trump and key conservative figures, Donalds is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming race for Florida governor.
