March Madness: Reported Atlanta shooting near arena puts man in ICU

Atlanta Police are currently investigating a shooting that occurred near State Farm Arena during Friday’s March Madness Sweet 16 game between Michigan State and Ole Miss. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the victim, a 42-year-old man from Charlotte, North Carolina, is currently in intensive care at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The incident took place just moments before the game began, leaving the victim hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Lt. Andrew Smith, commander of Atlanta’s homicide unit, stated, “The victim was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is currently in ICU. Grady was able to bring him back in the trauma room, where he was taken to the operating room and is now in ICU.”

Reports indicate that the shooting occurred when a man approached a group of individuals on a sidewalk and engaged in a verbal altercation before shots were fired. As of now, no suspects have been taken into custody, and the investigation is ongoing.

Despite the tragic event, Michigan State managed to secure a victory over Ole Miss with a final score of 73-70, advancing to the Elite Eight. The Atlanta Police Department has been contacted for further details on the incident.
