Toronto’s University Health Network launches scientist recruitment campaign amid U.S. health cuts, layoffs

Toronto’s University Health Network (UHN) is making waves with their new initiative, “Canada Leads,” aimed at attracting top medical scientists from around the world to join their team. In light of recent layoffs in the United States, UHN is seizing the opportunity to recruit 100 of the world’s brightest early-career health scientists to support Canadian medical research and drive economic growth.

The Canada Leads program offers selected scientists a two-year research funding commitment, mentorship from leading entrepreneurs, and assistance in transitioning to their new home in Canada. UHN President and CEO, Kevin Smith, believes that this recruitment effort will lead to groundbreaking discoveries and economic benefits in manufacturing, biotech, and commercialization.

“We know there is an incredible opportunity to supercharge our Canadian economy through bold investment in science and technology,” Smith stated. “Nations that invest in science lead in innovation and prosperity, and we want Canada to be at the forefront of that movement.”

The initiative will not only boost medical research and innovation but also create a made-in-Canada supply chain for advanced medical products and services. With over $400 billion spent on healthcare annually in Canada, Smith emphasizes the need to capitalize on homegrown discoveries and reap the economic benefits.

To kickstart the recruitment process, UHN will invest $15 million to recruit the first 50 researchers, with funding secured through philanthropic investments. The UHN Foundation and the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation are actively seeking matching funds to support this endeavor.

Moreover, UHN aims to capitalize on the brain drain occurring in the U.S., where thousands of health researchers are facing layoffs due to budget cuts at federal health agencies. With Manitoba and B.C. launching their own campaigns to attract U.S. healthcare professionals, UHN sees an opportunity to lure some of the top scientists to Canada.

UHN’s Toronto General Hospital, recently ranked as the third best hospital in the world by Newsweek, serves as an attractive destination for top scientists looking to relocate. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who supports UHN’s recruitment strategy, announced plans for an ad campaign to attract U.S. scientists to the province.
