Muslim group, constituents call for Andrew Lawton’s removal as Conservative candidate in southern Ontario

An advocacy group that fights against Islamophobia is pushing for the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) to remove a London, Ont.-area candidate from the federal election ballot due to his past comments about marginalized groups, including the Muslim community, women, and 2SLGBTQ+ groups. Hikma Public Affairs Council, based in London, is calling for the removal of Andrew Lawton as a candidate in Elgin–St. Thomas–London South. The group stated that Lawton has a “well-documented pattern of deeply offensive and discriminatory remarks,” including Islamophobic, antisemitic, homophobic, misogynistic, and anti-Indigenous commentary.
The council expressed deep concern over Lawton’s divisive record, stating that public office should not be a platform for personal prejudice but a public trust that must be upheld by individuals who respect the communities they serve. Lawton, a former journalist and author, has faced backlash for his involvement in a group chat with leaders of the Freedom Convoy during a federal inquiry into the Emergencies Act.
In response to the criticism, Lawton acknowledged his past behavior, attributing it to mental health challenges and expressing regret for his hurtful comments. He emphasized his commitment to living by example and being the best version of himself. Despite his apology, local residents are protesting Lawton’s candidacy, arguing that he has not adequately addressed or shown remorse for his past remarks.
Lawton’s history of controversial statements, including Islamophobic and homophobic comments, has raised concerns among constituents who feel that his views do not align with the values of inclusivity and progress in the Elgin–St. Thomas–London South riding. Some residents believe that Lawton’s candidacy represents a step backward rather than forward for the community. Protesters, including members of Elgin County Pride, are planning to demonstrate at Lawton’s campaign office in St. Thomas to raise awareness and encourage informed decision-making among voters.
The push to remove Lawton from the ballot is part of a larger trend in the current federal election, with several candidates from various parties being dropped due to controversial statements. As the campaign progresses, the focus remains on ensuring that candidates uphold the values of respect, inclusivity, and progress in representing their constituents.
