‘A huge opportunity:’ Winnipeg businesses hope this Jets playoff run will be a lengthy one

The Winnipeg Jets are making a splash in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the excitement is not limited to just the fans. Businesses across the city are also reaping the benefits of the team’s success, with increased foot traffic and sales as the Jets continue to advance in the postseason.

Matheus Aquino, the general manager of Royal Sports on Pembina Highway, has seen a significant surge in demand for Jets merchandise. With the team’s record-breaking 56-game season and top finishes in the Central Division and Presidents’ Trophy, fans are clamoring for all things Jets-related. One popular item that flew off the shelves was a white baseball hat featuring the classic Jets logo from the 1990s, along with a “Goals for Kids” patch on the side.

Aquino noted that this particular hat sold out within an hour, showcasing the immense support and enthusiasm for the team. Downtown businesses are also capitalizing on the Jets’ success, with a 90% increase in sales reported during the team’s first playoff game in 2024. Olivia Billson from Downtown Winnipeg BIZ highlighted the opportunity this presents for local businesses, many of which are extending their hours, offering specials, and creating a vibrant atmosphere for fans.

At Boujee Restaurant & Bar on Main Street, owner Amit Saini experienced a significant uptick in business during the Jets’ recent victory over the St. Louis Blues. The restaurant saw a 50 to 60% increase in business compared to a regular season game day, with the lounge and bar bustling with enthusiastic fans.

Looking ahead, downtown Winnipeg is set to host a series of major sporting events, including the Canadian Elite Basketball League’s championship weekend festivities and the 112th Grey Cup. These events promise to bring even more excitement and foot traffic to the city, further boosting local businesses and creating a lively atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
