Alberta drought conditions expected to improve heading into 2025

Heading into 2025, Alberta’s farmers are cautiously optimistic about the upcoming growing season after a roller-coaster year of drought conditions followed by ample rain. Alison Davie of North Paddock Farms reflects on the uncertainty they faced in 2024 but expresses hope for a better year ahead.

The province saw significant improvements in drought conditions compared to the previous year, with only 35 percent of the agricultural region experiencing drought. Trevor Hadwen, an agroclimate specialist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, notes the positive signs of good soil moisture heading into winter and hopes for large snowfall events to recharge moisture levels for spring.

Alberta’s Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz’s office emphasizes the importance of water conservation measures and water-sharing agreements in managing drought conditions. The province allocated $125 million over five years for drought and flood mitigation programs, with a focus on long-term water challenges.

Despite the progress, some regions in Alberta still struggle with long-term moisture deficits, particularly in the west and southwest areas. Stream flows and reservoir levels remain low in these regions, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and conservation efforts.

Looking ahead, experts predict ongoing challenges around water supply in southern Alberta due to population growth and the potential for more frequent and severe droughts. While the province hasn’t confirmed future water-sharing models, the success of current agreements underscores the importance of collaborative solutions.

As farmers like Alison Davie prepare for the upcoming season, they remain vigilant about weather patterns and water availability. With a mix of hope and caution, Alberta’s agricultural community looks to Mother Nature for a favorable year in 2025.
