Alberta Youth Arrested in Terrorism Investigation Subject to Declaration of Peace

CALGARY – Police in Calgary say they have arrested a young person in connection with a terrorism investigation.

Details about the suspect’s identity are protected by the Juvenile Criminal Law Act.

RCMP says the youngster was arrested last week and appeared in court under a section of the Penal Code that allows a declaration of peace if there are fears the person is committing a terrorist crime.

If granted, the declaration of peace is in effect for a maximum of one year or, if there is a prior conviction for terrorism, for a maximum of five years.

Police say the youngster has been released and is subject to various conditions pending a future trial.

RCMP says the case is related to last week’s arrest of a 20-year-old man from Calgary on terrorism charges.

He faces two charges of facilitating a terrorist activity and two charges of participating in or contributing to an activity of a terrorist group.
