Alyssa Thomas has reclaimed the WNBA single-season assist record, surpassing Caitlin Clark’s mark of 337 assists set last season. Thomas, who now plays for the Phoenix Mercury after many successful years with the Connecticut Sun, needed six assists going into Saturday’s game against Connecticut to break the record. She achieved this milestone with a record-breaking assist on a three-pointer by Kathryn Westbeld in the second quarter.

This isn’t the first time Thomas has held the record. She previously set the record in 2023 with 316 assists while playing for Connecticut, only for Clark to break it the following year. Now, at 33 years old, Thomas has reclaimed the title with a total of 338 assists in just 37 games.

What makes Thomas’s accomplishment even more impressive is the fact that she achieved it playing as a forward. Known for her versatility as a point-forward, Thomas has been instrumental in facilitating the Mercury’s offense. A significant number of her assists this season have come from three-pointers, with nearly half of them being on shots from behind the arc. She currently holds the WNBA record for triple-doubles in a season and career.

With over 1,800 career assists, Thomas ranks seventh on the league’s all-time assist list, the only forward in the top 10. This season, she has averaged a career-best 9.2 assists, falling just short of Courtney Vandersloot’s record of 9.95 set in 2020.

In addition to her on-court success, Thomas recently made headlines for her involvement in the historic WNBA Canada Game in Vancouver. The game drew thousands of buzzing fans to Rogers Arena and marked Canada’s first-ever regular-season WNBA game.
