Ambassador says U.S. recognizes Canada’s ‘progress’ in protecting border, tackling fentanyl
Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, recently suggested that Canada might be able to avoid U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs by continuing to address issues such as illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking. In a recent interview on CBC’s Power & Politics, Hillman mentioned that advisers to the president have expressed satisfaction with Canada’s progress in these areas.
According to Hillman, discussions with officials in Washington indicate that Trump’s deadline to impose 25 per cent tariffs on almost all imports from Canada is linked to the country’s efforts to combat the spread of fentanyl and enhance border security. In response to these concerns, Canada has implemented various measures, including a $1.3 billion plan to secure the Canada-U.S. border and the appointment of Kevin Brosseau as a fentanyl czar.
In addition to the threat of tariffs on imports, Trump has also threatened to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, including those from Canada. However, Hillman remains optimistic, stating that there is a recognition of Canada’s progress and the country’s commitment to addressing these issues.
Hillman emphasized that Trump’s use of tariffs as a negotiation tool is part of his strategy to achieve non-trade related objectives, such as supporting domestic steel and aluminum industries. She believes that it is important to demonstrate to the president that such threats against Canada have the opposite effect of what he intends to accomplish.
While former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland has called for retaliatory measures against the U.S., Hillman advocates for a more measured approach to avoid escalating tensions. She suggests that Canada should demonstrate strength and national pride to show the president that the country is willing to work towards mutually beneficial solutions.
In conclusion, Hillman’s insights shed light on the complex dynamics of international trade negotiations and the importance of strategic communication in dealing with challenges posed by the current U.S. administration. By focusing on progress made in addressing key issues and maintaining a pragmatic approach, Canada aims to navigate through the uncertainties of trade relations with its neighbor to the south.
