Anesthesiologist attempts to murder wife on Hawaii hiking trail: police

Newly released court documents have shed light on a horrifying incident that took place on a Hawaii hiking trail earlier this week, where a woman’s husband allegedly tried to kill her. Gerhardt Konig, a 46-year-old anesthesiologist, appeared in a Honolulu district courtroom for a procedural hearing on Thursday, facing charges of attempted second-degree murder. Prosecutors presented an affidavit detailing the evidence against him, providing a chilling account of the events that unfolded on the Pali Lookout trail on Oahu.
According to the court documents obtained by Fox News Digital, Konig’s wife recounted the terrifying ordeal to police. The couple had been hiking when Konig suggested taking a selfie near the edge of the trail. When his wife declined, feeling uneasy about the precarious position, Konig became agitated and pushed her into the bushes. As she tried to escape, Konig allegedly began assaulting her, striking her in the head with a rock multiple times and smashing her face into the ground.
The woman managed to break free and call for help, attracting the attention of two other hikers who rushed to her aid. One of the hikers, identified as “Amanda,” heard the woman’s cries for help and found Konig attacking his wife with a rock. The victim pleaded for help, telling Amanda that her husband was trying to kill her. The second hiker, referred to as “Sarah,” called 911 while the two women helped the victim to safety as Konig fled the scene.
The victim sustained severe injuries, including multiple lacerations to her face and head, and was transported to a local hospital in serious condition by the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. Konig’s bail has been set at $5 million, and he is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Monday.
Following the incident, police launched a search for Konig, who was apprehended approximately seven hours later after a brief foot pursuit near Pali Highway. The victim’s attorney issued a statement, revealing that she is focusing on her recovery with the support of her family and requesting privacy during this challenging time.
Konig, who obtained his medical license in September 2022, had been working as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center. However, his medical staff privileges have been suspended pending an investigation, as Maui Health takes the safety of its patients seriously and will cooperate with authorities as needed.
As this disturbing case continues to unfold, Konig’s attorneys have yet to respond to media inquiries. The community remains shocked by the heinous nature of the alleged crime and stands in solidarity with the victim as she embarks on her journey to healing.
