At least 1,000 dead after landslide in Sudan’s Darfur wipes out village
A tragic landslide in the village of Tarasin in Sudan’s western region of Darfur has left devastation in its wake, claiming the lives of an estimated 1,000 people, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s recent history. The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, which controls the area, reported the heartbreaking news on Monday.
The disaster occurred following days of heavy rainfall in the Marrah Mountains of Central Darfur. The rebel group stated that the entire village of Tarasin was leveled to the ground, with only one survivor found. The group has urgently called for assistance from the United Nations and international aid organizations to help recover the bodies of the victims.
Abdul Wahid Al Nour, the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, emphasized the urgent need for international support, describing the scale of the disaster as immense and beyond words.
The ruling Sovereign Council in Khartoum expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of hundreds of innocent lives in the landslide and assured that all possible resources are being mobilized to aid the affected area.
The remote village of Tarasin, located in the central Marrah Mountains, is only accessible by foot or animals, making rescue and recovery efforts challenging. The volcanic region, known for its high altitude and heavy rainfall, is a world heritage site situated over 900 kilometers west of the capital city, Khartoum.
This devastating event comes amidst a civil war that has engulfed Sudan, leading to widespread violence and displacement. The conflict has made many parts of Darfur inaccessible to humanitarian organizations, leaving communities in dire need of assistance. Aid groups, including Doctors Without Borders, have raised concerns about the lack of adequate support for these isolated areas.
The Marrah Mountains, where the landslide occurred, have become a focal point for displaced families fleeing the ongoing conflict in the region. The situation in Sudan has led to a humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in need of assistance and facing severe food shortages.
The international community must come together to provide urgent aid to the people of Sudan, especially those affected by the recent landslide in Tarasin. The tragic loss of lives underscores the urgent need for support and assistance to prevent further suffering in this war-torn nation.
