B.C.’s Chris Morrissey, a ‘fierce’ advocate for 2SLGBTQ+ immigration rights, mourned by community

The passing of Chris Morrissey, a renowned 2SLGBTQ+ advocate, has sparked an outpouring of tributes across social media and news outlets. Yogi Omar, a close friend of Morrissey, described her as a “hero” who tirelessly worked to make the queer community more inclusive and diverse. Morrissey, who founded Rainbow Refugee in 2000, dedicated her life to helping individuals fleeing persecution based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Sharalyn Jordan, co-chair of Rainbow Refugee, fondly remembered Morrissey as “indomitable, extraordinary, and fiercely loving.” Morrissey’s commitment to advocating for 2SLGBTQ+ immigrants led to significant changes in Canadian immigration laws, allowing same-sex couples to sponsor each other for immigration.
Born and raised in a community-oriented family in Prince George, B.C., Morrissey eventually became a nun and met her life partner, Bridget Coll, during a mission in Chile. Their struggle to have Coll recognized as a partner in Canada sparked a public campaign that ultimately led to changes in immigration laws. Morrissey also founded LEGIT, an organization focused on helping individuals navigate the immigration process, before establishing Rainbow Refugee to create communities of belonging for queer and trans refugees.
In recognition of her tireless advocacy work, Morrissey was awarded the Order of Canada in 2019. Her legacy continues to inspire others to stand up for equality and fight for a more inclusive society. Yogi Omar emphasized Morrissey’s legacy as a beacon of authenticity and resilience, urging others to follow her example of standing on the right side of history while spreading love and compassion.
The impact of Chris Morrissey’s work will continue to be felt in the 2SLGBTQ+ community, as her legacy lives on through the organizations she founded and the lives she touched. Her unwavering dedication to creating a more welcoming and inclusive world for all individuals will be remembered and honored for years to come.
